GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE)

More than 30 million people from all across the globe have taken the TOEFL test to show their English-language proficiency. TOEFL is a standardized examination to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enrol in English-speaking universities. The TOEFL began developing in 1962 and was first conducted two years later. Its purpose is to prepare international students for studying in an English-speaking country or program. The TOEFL test is developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), which arranges the questions, conducts the test, and also sends each examinee the scoring record. More than 10,000 colleges, agencies, and other institutions in over 130 countries accept TOEFL scores. Studying abroad at an English-speaking university is an excellent way for students to broaden their perspective and gain an edge in the job market.

That path to success starts with the TOEFL test. There are about 4500 TOEFL test centers across the world. Several institutions place varying degrees of importance on TOEFL Scores and use them along with other factors such as GPA, class rank, community service, recommendations and extracurricular activities. It is available in two forms.

  • TOEFL IBT (Internet Based Test).
  • TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test).

TOEFL PBT no more exists in India, so TOEFL IBT is the only course name prevalent. The TOEFL score is also asked by scholarships and higher education funding agencies to ensure that a candidate will be able to complete his / her studies in university settings where the language of expression is English. There is TOEFL practice test that gives you the experience of taking the real TOEFL IBT test. Your practice must involve more than just sets of questions. You must also prepare for the format, timing, and pacing of the TOEFL exam.

STRUCTURE

The TOEFL iBT test uses integrated tasks that require test takers to combine skills just as they would in a real academic setting. For the CBT, you will answer many questions in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. For the PBT, you will do Listening, Structure and Written Expression, Reading Comprehension and Writing. TOEFL exam pattern is as follow – four sections. Namely, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing – along with the total score as below:

  • TOEFL Reading Test: includes reading passages, then respond to questions (0–30)
  • TOEFL Listening Test: involves Listening to lectures or a classroom discussion, then respond to questions (0–30)
  • TOEFL Speaking Test: includes Speaking into a microphone about familiar topics and discuss material you read about and listened to (0–30)
  • TOEFL Writing Test: includes reading a passage, listen to a recording and then type your written response0–30

The entire score is the sum of the four skill scores. Transcripts will be posted online approximately ten days after the test date. ETS will send up to four sanctioned score reports directly to the institutions the student selects.
